Information on the planned M42 Motorway Service Area between Junctions 5 and 6 in Solihull, developer Extra MSA Group Ltd.

Planning permission was granted in 2022 subject to conditions which allow implementation only at a time when access can be achieved from an ALR smart motorway. It is not known when construction may take place. Please provide copy of

• the appraisal by or for National Highways of the M42 Solihull MSA proposal against current policy (in force in 2025) for Smart Motorways, including All-Lane Running

• any approvals issued to the Extra MSA Group Ltd in 2024 or 2025 to permit it to construct access to the M42 between Junctions 5 and 6 Please send information requested to plans_cpre_warks@outlook.com (by email attachment or by Dropbox method).

Response

Please see the attached documents for the information National Highways holds within the scope of your request. Please note that the technical note and the drawing are the same attachments referred to in both the 4th January 2024 e-mail to the Department for Transport and also the e-mail of the same day to Arup and Extra.

It is also worth noting that the technical note is not an appraisal document but it was provided to the Department for Transport to support its consideration of the issue.

Please be aware that this is not a new section of smart motorway but is instead an alteration to an existing stretch.
