FOI - Age of motorway bridges

This request was refused in part, so we didn't provide some of the information the requester asked for. This may include information where we can neither confirm nor deny that we hold it.

Case reference EIR2024/01814

Received 19 December 2024

Request

I would like a (1) list of bridges on the motorway network. For each entry, if possible, please list

(a) the location of each bridge,

(b) the condition of each bridge at the last two inspections,

(c) the year each bridge was installed, and

(d) the life expectancy of each bridge (please specify whether this is the life expectancy from the build date or from now).

Response

Information provided

(a) the location of each bridge

(b) the condition of each bridge at the last two inspections

(c) the year each bridge was installed

Please find attached a spreadsheet titled 'EIR2024 01814 - Motorway Bridges' which contains data extracted on 7 January 2025. It includes all bridges on the motorways that are part of the Strategic Road Network in England and are owned by National Highways.

Please note that the Structural Condition Index (SCI) represents an inspector's opinion on the overall condition of the structure and does not take into account factors such as age. The inspector selects one of the following three options: Good, Fair or Poor.

Information not held

(d) the life expectancy of each bridge (please specify whether this is the life expectancy from the build date or from now).

I can confirm that National Highways does not hold this information, and as such this part of your request has been refused under Regulation 12(4)(a) of the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 as information not held.

Advice and Assistance

We do not hold information on the 'life expectancy' of bridges as this not an indicator recognised by Bridges Owners to determine how to manage and maintain bridges during their life cycle.
