Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to request recorded information relating to road traffic collisions on the A1 in Northumberland. Please provide the following for the period 26 May 2024 to 26 May 2026:

1. The number of recorded personal injury road traffic collisions on the A1 within the Northumberland local authority area, broken down by year and by month.

2. For each collision, where held, please provide:

  • Date and time of collision

  • Location / road section / junction / grid reference

  • Severity: fatal, serious, slight

  • Number of casualties by severity

  • Number of vehicles involved and vehicle types

  • Brief collision description / contributory factors if recorded

  • Weather / light / road surface conditions at time of collision

3. If data is held at a more granular level, please provide it in a machine-readable format such as CSV or Excel.

If you do not hold the full dataset requested, please advise which part is held by National Highways and which part would need to be requested from Northumbria Police or the Department for Transport.

Response

We can advise that in relation to collisions, information is publicly available via the STATS19 database. This is a collection of all road traffic collisions that resulted in a personal injury, including fatalities, and were reported to the police within 30 days of the collision, either by police officers in attendance at the scene of collisions, from members of the public reporting the incident in police stations after the incident, or more recently online. The STATS19 data is validated and published annually by the Department for Transport (DfT).

The most recently available STATS19 dataset is for 2024 and was published by DfT in September 2025. Information not held

We can confirm that in accordance with Section 1(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, National Highways does not hold the requested information for 2025 or 2026. 2025 STATS19 dataset is expected to be published by DfT in Autumn 2026.
