Safety on the M1 junctions 31-26
Case reference FOI2024/00911
Received 25 August 2024
Published 13 December 2024
Request
The number of accidents on the M1 between junctions 31 and 26 before and after the installation of speed cameras (broken down by junction sections) for an equal time frame prior to their install to match that since their installation.
I want to see how the cameras at justified to reduce accidents and if any other changes have occurred to this part of the M1.
I am also asking for the details of how the signage is complaint with the Highway rules but unclear how this is from you but this is whom I was told to ask.
Clarification received:
These would be the cameras in use in February this year as part of the usual day to day operations around the ‘smart’ motorway changing speeds.
Response
The cameras along this section of the M1 were installed in several phases between 2019 and 2021. We have provided a breakdown of these dates as below; however, these dates do not reflect when these cameras were or were not being used for enforcement activities.
While National Highways provides speed detection equipment, the use of these cameras, and the data they capture for enforcement activity is managed exclusively by the police.

Regarding your comment about how the signage on the network is compliant, all highway signs located on the strategic road network are designed and installed to the national standard at that time. This standard is specified in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, which is publicly available at https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/contents/made.
There is more information available on our website about the standards that are required for our speed detection equipment, and for the prosecution of speeding offences at https://nationalhighways.co.uk/road-safety/variable-speed-limits/ under the section titled ‘Speed detection equipment.’
