Response
How many VMS units are required for this project?
This is an order for a variety of Variable Message Signs for a number of different projects (some of which are already under construction) rather than a single project, all requiring different numbers of signs and this order is for 41 signs in total.
Is this in relation to the ongoing works on Junction 10 of the M25? If not, then what geographical area will these units be going?
None of the signs are for the M25 Junction 10 project. These signs will be used for projects in the Midlands, North West and the South West.
What is the time frame expectation, from the point of order, to the point of delivery?
These signs will be delivered throughout the year when required by the projects, but all signs are expected to have been delivered by December this year.
What system is being used to control the units?
The signs will be controlled in the same way as other signs of this type already installed in the network: they are connect to compatible roadside controllers, which are in turn connected to our National Motorway Communication System. These allow the signs to be controlled remotely from our Regional Operating Centres. There is further information on how we operate variable message signs
Will the VMS units be manufactured by a third party? If so, who? These signs will be manufactured by Colas Ltd and their supply chain.
Who is the senior person (outside of procurement) responsible for this contract?
Head of Operational Technology
