FOI release

Hands phone usage risk assessment

Case reference FOI2025/01931

Received 10 October 2025

Published 14 January 2026

Request

Having read the H&SE guidance it says you must do a risk assessment in relation to driving for work.

Using a hands free phone significantly increases the risk of a collision so you should have a risk assessment and I look forward to seeing this soon.

It also states that these should cover the journey, the driver / rider and the vehicle.

Can you please confirm if you have undertaken a risk assessment and if I can have a copy.

Response

Our Driving for Work Procedure (attached) requires our employees who drive for and at work to complete an individual driving for work risk assessment (refreshed annually).

We have included a copy of the risk assessment template (attached).

The assessment of risk posed by using mobile phones whilst driving for work was contained within the SHEQ paper dated February 2023 – previously supplied to you on 7 October 2025 under FOI 2025_01658.
