Please consider the following as a request under the Freedom of Information Act (2000). For each of the last five years, can you please provide annual totals for the following:

1. The number of pothole compensation claims received

2. The number of pothole compensation claims paid out

3. The amount the council paid out in pothole compensation claims

Please provide this for each of the following financial years (24/25, 23/24, 22/23, 21/22, 20/21):

Please note the data:

  • Relies on claim information being available and captured

  • Only shows data linked to the main category being recorded as pothole and red claims

  • Covers incidents recorded between 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2025 And that the financial information is taken from our Claims Management System(CMS/CRM) however, actual payment dates recorded by Finance may differ slightly.

We set stringent standards for pothole repairs on our roads, aiming to repair the most serious defects within 24 hours. Maintaining and investing in our roads is our priority, and for the past four years we have consistently met the national target, ensuring that over 90% of our motorways and major A-roads remain in good condition.
