Request

Please can I have statistics on the number of trees which have died since the trees were originally planted in 2020, including a breakdown of:

- How many trees died between the original planting in 2020 and the re-planting in October 2023?

- How many trees have died since the re-planting in October 2023 (up to the most current date possible)?

Response

How many trees died between the original planting in 2020 and the re-planting in October 2023?

160,000 trees.

How many trees have died since the re-planting in October 2023 (up to the most current date possible)?

I can confirm that National Highways does not hold this information, and as such this part of your request has been refused under Regulation 12(4)(a) of the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 as information not held.

We do not yet hold a record of how many trees died or survived between October 2023 and 4 February 2024 (the date of your request).

We are currently undertaking a survey which will confirm the failure rate. This is due to be completed by the end of March 2025 and you are welcome to make a request for it then.

Please note that there is currently no indication of any similar large-scale failure.
