Bank holiday traffic data 2025
Case reference FOI2026/00488

Request
I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I would like to request traffic flow data for England's motorways during Bank Holiday weekends in 2024. Specifically, I am requesting:
* Traffic volume data (vehicle counts) by hour, where available, for each bank holiday weekend in 2025 (including Easter, early May, spring bank holiday, and August bank holiday)
* A breakdown by day (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday)
* If hourly data is not available, please provide the closest available time intervals (e.g. peak periods or daily totals)
If possible, I would also appreciate any summary data or analysis identifying the busiest days and / or times during these periods.
Response
National Highways does not produce pre-aggregated datasets or summary reports for Bank Holiday periods in the format you describe. However, the underlying traffic count data is publicly available through our WebTRIS traffic information system.
Therefore, under Section 21 of the Act, we are not required to provide information, which is already reasonably accessible to you. All vehicle flow counts collected from our monitoring sites are available at: https://webtris.highwaysengland.co.uk/ and https://webtris.highwaysengland.co.uk/api/swagger/ui/index - API Access Link.
Using the API, you can obtain traffic flow counts in 15-minute intervals, which you may aggregate to hourly totals, daily totals, or any other structure required.
Summary Data / Busiest Times:
We do not hold pre-prepared analytical summaries for Bank Holiday traffic. Users typically generate their own summaries by aggregating WebTRIS data according to their requirements.
Advice and Assistance
To obtain the data you need, we recommend using the following relevant API Endpoints
1. Sites Endpoint This allows you to retrieve a list of all monitoring sites on the network, This will provide the site IDs (e.g 1,2,3..) you can use in the Reports Endpoint.
2. Reports Endpoint This provides flow count data separated by vehicle lengths for specified sites and date ranges. Here you can specify a date range required.
The interface will return structured JSON ready for download or further processing.
