A14 tree replanting funds

Case reference EIR2025/01631

Received 26 August 2025

Published 30 December 2025

Request

There have been numerous stories in the press over the last few years about the failure of the tree planting on the A14 (Huntington Bypass) scheme.

Please could you provide summary details of all the replanting (number of trees, approximate location and date replanted) that has been carried since the scheme was opened in 2020 and how this was funded, i.e. which National Highways or second road investment strategy budget paid for each replanting?

If anything about this request is unclear please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Response

We can confirm that we hold the information you have requested.

1. Please could you provide summary details of all the replanting (number of trees, approximate location and date replanted) that has been carried since the scheme was opened in 2020.

Approximately 356k were planted alongside the new dual carriageway, further 504k around the borrow pits (Total 860k). Case reference EIR2025/00228 states that we replanted 160k trees in October 2023.

In published response to request EIR2025/00228 we state that we don’t have the requested information on trees that have died since the replanting. That response was prepared in February 2025. In spring we undertook a new dead count. This identified that a further 53k trees have died since the replanting. This include trees that were part of the original planting scheme. These are scheduled for replanting this Autumn/Winter.

2. and how this was funded, i.e. which National Highways or second road investment strategy budget paid for each replanting?

To date, replanting has been funded from existing project and contingency funds allocated within RIS2.
